A Stunning Olympics by China

Brennan Wong: Sports Reporter

"The games of the 29th Olympiad in China were great," says President of the International Olympic Committee, Jaques Rogge. With 204 countries attending, which is the most to ever come to the Olympics, China had to put on a spectacular show for the opening ceremony. The 8000 rockets they fired high up into the Beijing sky, the human painters, and the oarsmen recreating the Silk Road were some of the highlights at the opening ceremony. Below are the medal counts of some countries:

China

100 Medals

U.S.A

 110 Medals

 Canada

 18 Medals

" I am so happy for our Olympic team," says Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. "Keep up the good work for 2012!"

How Rules and Respect Create Sportsmanship

Why is fighting still permitted by the NHL? Should fighting be eliminated altogether? Recently, the case of Covenant School Christian High School in Dallas mercilessly pummeled a rival team, ultimately posting a 100 – 0 victory against the rival team, Dallas Academy. However, it was considered as poor sportsmanship in high school sports. Ideally, true sportsmanship should run through professional sports. However, the NHL still condones fighting as an essential part of the game. It remains part of the culture. The ill-timed death of amateur hockey player Donald Sanderson from an on – ice fight led to the creation of the rule where players have to wear helmets during fights. This may reduce the occurrence of fighting but does not address the issue of why fighting is still tolerated in the games.

There should be a zero – tolerance policy on fighting in the NHL. Every player for every fight should be suspended as in a case with any other major team sports. Hockey needs a fundamental cultural shift. It is necessary to see true sportsmanship in hockey.
